Understanding the problems this creates — and identifying practical responses — is a pressing priority for communities and local authorities alike. The most immediate problem is the pressure that growing volumes of waste place on landfill capacity. As landfill sites reach their limits, authorities face the costly challenge of developing new facilities, often meeting strong opposition from communities understandably reluctant to host them nearby. Beyond the logistical challenge, decomposing organic material in landfill produces methane — a potent greenhouse gas — while toxic substances from improperly disposed electronics and chemicals leach into groundwater. Food waste represents a particularly damaging component: enormous quantities of edible food discarded from households worldwide contribute to emissions while representing a profound waste of the agricultural resources used to produce them. Single-use plastic packaging, much of which escapes the waste management system entirely, accumulates in rivers, coastlines, and ocean ecosystems with well-documented consequences for wildlife.
