If pension systems were designed around a life expectancy that no longer reflects reality, maintaining those original thresholds is financially unsustainable — the working population supporting each retiree is shrinking, while the number of years each retiree draws benefits is growing. Without adjustment, pension systems face structural deficits that will ultimately harm the very people they are designed to protect. Beyond fiscal sustainability, there is a strong individual case for continued work in later life. Mental engagement in purposeful activity is consistently associated with better cognitive health in older adults, and many people find genuine satisfaction and social connection through their careers that retirement can abruptly remove. Older workers bring accumulated experience, institutional knowledge, and professional judgement that organisations benefit from retaining. The assumption that everyone wants to stop working at sixty-five reflects a previous generation's expectations more than a universal human desire. The important caveat is equity. Raising the retirement age is straightforward for office professionals whose work is mentally rather than physically demanding, but deeply unfair when applied uniformly to manual workers, caregivers, and others whose bodies have absorbed decades of physical strain. A reformed retirement system should therefore incorporate flexible thresholds that reflect occupational demands, allowing those in physically intensive roles to retire earlier without financial penalty. With this nuance built in, raising the retirement age is both justified and achievable.
