As housing costs continue to rise in major cities, growing numbers of workers are spending considerable portions of their day simply getting to and from work. This trend is generating serious consequences for individual well-being and family life that cannot be ignored. The most direct problem is the physical and mental fatigue that lengthy commutes produce. Workers who spend two or more hours in transit each day arrive at the office already tired, which depresses productivity and increases the likelihood of errors. By the time they return home in the evening, little energy remains for family time, leisure, or rest. This chronic exhaustion has been linked to elevated stress levels, sleep disorders, and a heightened risk of burnout. Families suffer as well, with parents frequently absent during key hours of the morning and evening, reducing the quality of time spent with children and straining relationships with partners. Both employers and local governments have practical tools to address this problem. Employers can introduce flexible working hours that allow staff to travel outside peak congestion periods, significantly reducing the time and discomfort of each journey. Offering remote work options on certain days of the week removes the commute entirely on those days, providing immediate relief. Local governments, meanwhile, should invest in public transport infrastructure — more frequent services, extended routes, and better connectivity between suburban areas and employment centres. Encouraging the development of satellite offices in residential areas, so that workers can report to a closer facility rather than the central headquarters, is another promising urban planning strategy. With coordinated effort from both sides, the burden of long commuting can be meaningfully reduced, restoring time and energy to the workers and families who need it most.
