Its advantages and disadvantages deserve careful examination. The benefits of this living arrangement are considerable. Financially, sharing accommodation significantly reduces the per-person cost of housing, utilities, and household maintenance — a meaningful advantage at a time when property costs make independent living increasingly difficult for young adults and older people alike. The presence of grandparents provides a ready source of trusted childcare, which reduces families' dependence on expensive external provision and allows parents to maintain their careers with greater peace of mind. For elderly family members, living within the household provides daily social interaction, practical assistance, and the emotional security of close family proximity, all of which are associated with better mental and physical health in older age. The intergenerational relationships that develop naturally in these households also transmit cultural tradition, shared values, and a sense of family identity that can be difficult to maintain when generations live apart. The disadvantages, however, are real. Domestic space is frequently a source of tension when multiple adults with different habits, schedules, and parenting philosophies share it continuously.
